Five dead after Sunday rains

National Disaster Management Organisation officials have disclosed at least five bodies have been retrieved after hours of rains in Accra Sunday.

The bodies include that of a six-year-old found at Sowutuom, the PRO of NADMO George Awusi said.

Others were found at Ablekuma, Odorna and Adjei Kojo in Ashaiman, NADMO disclosed.

The Ghana Meteorological Agency has warned of heavy downpours in the coming days.  Several areas in Accra got flooded during the rains.

The rainstorm, according to the Agency, affected areas such as Kpetoe, Akatsi, Ho, Kpandu and its environs in the Volta Region.

In the Eastern Region, areas such as Koforidua, Begoro and Nkawkaw were also affected. Dodowa, Amasama, Afienya and many areas in Accra also experienced the downpour.

Last week five people lost their lives in similar circumstances in the capital.

Greater Accra Regional Director of NADMO, Archibald Cobbinah told Morning Starr host Francis Abban in an earlier interview there is a need for drastic change in the habit of citizens who litter indiscriminately.

“The way and manner in which we keep putting garbage in our gutters will not help us in any way at all. It is sad how people take advantage of the rains to collect and put rubbish on our drains,” he said.

He is calling for enforcement of the laws to “punish people who litter and throw rubbish in our drains.”

He added: “We all have a role to play to ensure we keep our cities and drainages clean. People should take precautionary measures to ensure they are safe during the rainy season. People should identify safe havens within their communities where they can be safe, especially when they know their houses or community floods when it rains.”
